After amazing summer in Zurich was coming to the end, it was time to prolong it a bit and the logic choice was Italy – where the summer and Dolce Vita almost never ends.
And as I was invited to a wedding on the Amalfi coast, I decided to go for one way ticket.
To sum up – Amalfi coast would be great, if it would be less touristic.
However Napoli is still the Real Deal – trash everywhere, shady but funny people, the best mozzarella di buffala, amazing pizza margheritta and another little magic – EVERYTHING is possible in Napoli, like jumping to little groceries store and suddenly they organize a full lunch for you and even arrange a seating in the middle of the streets .
Remember – Naples is CRAZY. And there are many reasons why…. Scooters flying like mad on the super narrow streets of old town, but still managing to write sms with one hand and eat sandwich with the other, and the helmets… well helmets in Naples exists only in case it’s “too cold in the evening”.
People will try to full you everywhere – there is no written prices here and receipts – prices always depends on how you look (so always try to look as scruffy as possible), and if you are not Italian be ready to pay at least 3 times more – arguing is not recommended here.
If at the end you decide to to visit quartieri spagnoli – don’t forget to leave everything valuable at home, they will notice even more expensive sneakers.
However let’s speak about Naple’s pizza… There is only one expression to describe it – oooh (to pronounce like orgasmic “oooh”) the pizza!! And I’m definitely not the pizza fan, but Margherita with mozzarella di buffala in Naples it’s a piece of heaven – just no touristic place, for real taste go to that dirty looking pizzeria where the real Napoletani goes. About mozzarella di buffalla I could write a full chapter – there is never enough of it, wherever I would see Cheese shop I would grab some and eat it on spot.
I have been in foodie’s paradise and it’s called Naples. Starting from pizza, seafood, fresh mozzarella di buffalla, baba and other sweets… And COFFEE!! Naples is the place for coffee.
Let’s not forget the wedding too – it was a total food coma.
After exploring Naples city we moved on to Amalfi coast – it’s simply stunning, but we are simply 50 years too late.
After we decided to settle in Vico Equense – the less touristic spot we managed to find around. In the most crazy hidden giant hotel we discovered – and God knows, I love nice hotels. For the moment I really felt like back to 60s Italian Dolce vita.
However the beach in Vico Equence can be enjoyable only from the terrace or from the boat… Much better choice - Bikini beach just next door – simply elegant upscale beach paradise.
As a real interior junkie, I had to dedicate a post to our little place in New York. We got this place totally accidentally and took it even without seeing this “little old Soho arty loft” and the only stuff we knew was that it has bathroom full of mirrors and No Doors. So you can only imagine all the anxiety of having no idea where you are going to…. And you can imagine the surprise, when we opened the door and saw THIS:
You remember all these “made in NYC” movies where the characters drink/kiss/chit chat on the fire escape stairs? So you know what I mean…. Only after some Champagne I had courage to step on it
NYC, you drive me crazy! So this time I took it serious and tried to fight agains organic era in pretty fatty and highly recommended way!
I never been much attracted of the States and I always preferred to go direction Asia if I needed to choose a holiday destination, but this time we needed something new, something different and something BIG.
So the choice was quite obvious – big apple – a city represetent for me by Sex and The City. Or a city that never sleeps. Or the city from the songs of Frank Sinatra.
Gosh, I don’t know if I should believe in The Secret or what, but everything went quite magically - first it was just some drunken dreams, than suddenly we were offered an amazing loft in the middle of SoHo and than well – there was no way back – just to leave everything in Zurich, buy tics and do it.
So here we are, in our little crazy loft (it deserves a separate proper review) in the middle of NYC, watching The Big Gatsby party at Prada store across the street just through our windows – how much more crazy can it get?
The next day we find out ourselves located just in shoppers paradise, surrounded by every girl’s dream luxury brands, but still seeking the essentials - GROCERIES. Yes I heard about the New-York-Skinny, but com’on – even these girls need to eat sometimes! Or wait a minute… no maybe they don’t- they can survive only from marvelous Smoothies, which you will find everywhere, just right there, on every corner in the city – getting kinda of boring )
However yes, buying groceries in Manhattan can be pretty tricky, and hell expensive. The only shop we had nearby was Dean and DeLuca – which looked absolutely stunning (the better NYC version of Swiss Globus), but the price range reflected the neighborhood.
Couple of blocks away I found Whole Foods Market (a pretty decent groceries store, but the prices are still on the upper side) and Trader Joe’s (a bit cheaper than the two mentioned before, but no bargain), and managed to get some groceries and fresh stuff, but in general there is no proper huge-American-style super market in Manhattan, so you have to go around Delies to get what you need. And yes, Everything is SUPER ORGANIC! welcome to the NYC era of smoothies, yoga and super organic food (being sarcastic dooh)
Being a huge fan of cheesecake I couldn’t be more excited to be in it’s motherhood, so I started my survey right away – I find out that one of the best stores in town is located just nearby – Eileen’s Cheesecake - don’t be fooled by the poor look from outside, the cheesecakes are truly amazing, especially the burbon one is highly recommended. Can’t help myself – I keep on coming and coming back
My next Must was legendary, spoken and written about in all most influential reviews Junior’s cheescake. And it was one big, fat disappointment - too heavy, too creamy, tooo… nothing special! So save your time and money, not worth at all, still don’t understand why people are getting crazy about it.
And of course – some touristic must destinations
That’s it for the first time – need to continue my cheesecake survey! Speak you soon
Salone del Mobile is the crazy in Limano when all the hotels are overbooked, all the bars are overcrowded, all the parties are overnight and you will find design on every corner of the city.
Next to Saloni there is Fuori Salone – even more crazy design showrooms in different parts of the city.
But forget a week here – you need one month to see everything, so don’t plan too much, as you never can know what’s next.
For me this week was all about walking, walking, walking, “I want it all”, friends, parties, aperitivos, coca-cola – and vodka-redbull – without this I probably couldn’t make it through long weekend when sleeping is not an option.
However even if it’s crazy and can be tiring sometimes, it’s definitely a must for everyone who loves cool happenings…
And who cares about The Fashion Week – The Design week is SO MUCH better!
Maybe Liguria is not considerate to be one of the most beautiful places on planet Earth – but I can say only “Thanks God!” – less tourists interrupt in my little own private heaven. I will have to be very subjective about Liguria, as it’s quite a magical place for me.
Where I used to spend sunny weekends with my girlfriends during the crazy studying in Italy year.
Where I used to come back during not so sunny days for some Italian retreat.
Where finally I used to work, but still more like living in dream, italian dream this time.
Visited so many times, I still can’t get enough… So many walks, so many secret courtyards, so many small towns, so many crazy restaurants, so many rides with vespas, so many wine, laughs, adventures, aperitivos and stories surrounded this little province.
However this time it was very short visit… Short and a bit rainy, but still better if we keep in mind that in the mean time it was snowing in Switzerland.
And even with the rain Italy just can’t be bad… There is more time to eat!!!!
That was our day 1 aim – eating, drinking, eating again, more wine, more food, a short party and nap at home, and starting once again.
Yes, I’m moving around like a gipsy. Yes, since 2 years I don’t a proper home. Yes, I am terrified to stuck somewhere some day.
But there is one particular place where my heart sings. Where it feels like home. Where everything seem to be so simple and special. Where I must go to refresh myself. To get inspired. To calm my inner self from misery.
This place is Lithuania. My true, only and distant home.
It’s like this secret lover – there is no future for two of them, but they still can’t stay away from each other.
However, even if you don’t plan to move to eastern Europe (even if I prefer “central Europe” as Lithuania is a geographical centre of the Europe or “north Europe”), I’m going to try to convince you to pay a visit.
The most popular and easiest to reach destination would be capital Vilnius.
Fancy easy, relaxed weekend filled with good food, drinks, parties, spa and all other kind of entertainment? It’s the right choice.
There are many hotels to choose from for your stay, but the best would be to rent a private apartment – it’s cheaper, usually very well located and convenient. However I love to try nice hotels, so sometimes we give it a try. It you fancy something more posh try Ramada – a 5 stars hotel in the middle of the city. They have a very nice Junior Suite – with lovely wooden floor bathroom with huge bath in the middle – definitely good choice for romantic relaxing stay.
On the other hand there is something nice for smaller budget – a new Comfort Hotel Vilnius just opened it’s doors.
Nice, new, modern and trendy 3 stars budget hotel – you will find everything you need here, with a nice concept of free tea/coffee 24 hours, big breakfast (something new every day) and cozy atmosphere. Worth trying Suite room – huge, comfortable, nice design and not too pricey.
